A stylish way to waste resources.

The first thing you NEED to know about this drive is that it needs two of your PC's USB slots - and they have to be the slots on your actual computer, not on an add-on hub (the extra few inches of cable on the hub will be enough to stop your drive from working.)

I'd assumed that it would also come with a 'proper' mains adaptor, like some of my Western Digital drives, but no. You can *only* use USB slots, and they have to be the ones on the PC.

When I discovered this, I started to dislike this product. And from there, things got worse.

The front of the drive has a pretty (but oversized and power-consuming) light panel. It takes up the whole front side of the drive, is on constantly (changing in intensity when the drive is accessed), and is totally unnecessary.

I can see people liking it because it looks cool, but really, what a waste of power. I wonder if one of those precious USB slots is needed just to keep this light show going?

When you get it working, you'll be offered the chance to install the 'Ceedo' software. This allows you to carry around apps and files. (I thought ALL USB drives allowed you to carry files around!)

Maybe it's just a personal thing, or maybe I was so annoyed by now that I hated almost everything about this drive, but I found the bundled software irritating and intrusive. Thankfully it includes its own uninstall routine, so you can dump it and then delete it from the drive.

Ceedo allows you to carry your web browser and email software around with you, helpfully offering you a drop-down menu to select your browser/reader of choice.

Uh... you can have ANY browser, so long as it's Internet Explorer, and any email software... so long as it's Outlook Express. I wouldn't touch either of them with a bargepole.

Yep. I'm REALLY hating this product.

I'm not quite sure why they bothered with that menu at all.

This is the 5th external drive I've bought for my computers. All the others have been Western Digital, and not all have been without minor annoyances - but none have been as bad as this resource-hogging, intrusive beast.

If you haven't already guessed, I totally regret buying it, and for future purchases I'll be going back to Western Digital.

Two stars, because it does at least function as a USB hard drive, and I'll be able to delete the awful Ceedo software. But I'm still mad about those USB ports!

Fantastic, small drive

I was very pleased with this drive. I was worried about having to use 2 usb ports, but the drive worked perfectly well on just 1.

I did not use the bundled software, as I do not need the functionality.

I'm beginning to wish I bought a larger version of the drive - 120GB is easy to fill up!

Nice but let down by the cable

It is a nice sleak and sexy looking drive. Ok size and space. The inbuilt program is ok but you are nto forced to use it.

My only problem is the cable provided. The 2 USB plug has quickly broken, I bought another drive and the same thing has happend. I have tried it on several computers but the cable seems incapbale of powering the drive.

I seem to recall at ifrst it was possible to run it on one plug but soon it quickly required 2 plug to simply turn on. Now neither drive works at all. It doesnt power up all even register on the computer.

Brilliant, the free ceedo software was a bonus

I've got numerous 3.5" external drive that require external power bricks. Was refreshing to get this without. Comes with a Y-usb2 cable, one for power+data and one for power only. Think you only need to use the 2nd if your usb ports are under powered. I've had it working on my desktop, wife's laptop and my work laptop with no issues (WinXp, Vista, WinXP - so don't know what the reviewer who claims it won't work with XP is talking about). Mines was recognised straight away by Windows, you have an option to explore the drive or run Ceedo. Had no issues with iTunes recognising this either.

Very quiet.

I love the ceedo software that comes with it. There are various downloadable software that runs with Ceedo, I've got winamp, vlc, imgburn and firefox hosted off this. Would recommend going for the 160GB, I've got the 120 and it is plenty but for what you pay, an extra 40GB is a no brainer.

NOT RECOGNISED BY "MY COMPUTER" no use with ITUNES

I would stay clear of this product. Yet another external USB drive that is not recognised by Windows XP. Hence you wont see it in Windows explorer and my computer.

Even if it shows in device manager anyone needing to extend their i tunes library to external storage wont be able to use this as it wont be recognised in the drop doWn list on my computer.

Their online support site is useless, you ask them a question, they come back and tell you that their product works and it must be your operating system. oH OF COURSE!!

GO FOR Western Digital Passport A GREAT PRODUCT much more reliable and does not have the awful double cord USB that Freegate has (positivley primitive and i think the core reason behind the problem - the device is not powered properly!!!) plus the awful yellow light is passe and the dam CEEDO integrated software will completely prevent pure drag and drop so you need to spend 24 hours binning this ceedo rubbish off your system before you can use it.

Waste of money, time and 21st century compatablity.
